Passerelle de Douai, France

Pedestrian bridge with unique geometry

Scope

The Passerelle de Douai is a pedestrian bridge distinguished by its unique and complex geometry. The structure spans approximately 300 m (984 ft) of railway tracks and wraps around a multi-storey parking garage, creating demanding structural and logistical conditions.

BrandSafway supported the project with efficient, system-based solutions using the INFRA-KIT modular formwork system, which was largely pre-assembled to optimise site logistics and installation efficiency.

Challenge

The bridge structure consisted of multiple individual steel elements that had to be welded together on site. Ensuring precise positioning, alignment and stability of these elements during installation was critical to the success of the project.

In addition, the complex geometry of the bridge generated substantial horizontal and vertical forces, requiring a robust temporary works solution capable of safely stabilising and bracing the structure throughout the erection process, particularly above active railway infrastructure.

Performance

An INFRA-KIT–based modular solution was developed to provide reliable support, stabilisation and bracing for the bridge elements during installation. The system was pre-assembled wherever possible, significantly improving logistics and reducing assembly time on site.

The flexibility and load-bearing capacity of the INFRA-KIT modular system made it ideally suited to withstand the high horizontal and vertical forces generated by the bridge’s geometry. This ensured accurate alignment of the individual sections during welding operations and provided safe, controlled installation conditions throughout all construction phases.
