Metro of Monterrey, Mexico

Elevated metro system creating the longest monorail in Latin America

Scope

The Metro of Monterrey project involved the construction of new elevated metro lines spanning a total distance of 37 km (23 mi) and comprising 40 new stations. Once completed, the system forms the longest monorail in Latin America, representing a major milestone in regional urban transport infrastructure.

BrandSafway supported the project with engineered access and support solutions for the construction of pier heads, contributing to efficient execution while minimising disruption to traffic and surrounding urban activities.

Challenge

The construction of the elevated structures took place largely above live traffic and densely populated urban areas, making it essential to limit disruption while maintaining high safety and productivity standards. The pier heads, including various hammerhead configurations, required robust temporary works solutions that could be installed quickly and adapted to different geometries.

In addition, the construction concept demanded solutions that allowed for pre-assembly at ground level, reducing work at height and ensuring controlled installation conditions during lifting operations.

Performance

A self-supporting solution for the pier heads was implemented, significantly reducing the need for extensive ground-based support and thereby minimising traffic disruption beneath the structures. Support frames were provided to create safe and comfortable working areas, improving efficiency and productivity for site crews.

Each pier head structure was pre-assembled on the ground and then lifted into its final position, ensuring high installation quality and reduced construction time at height. BrandSafway also provided engineering services and on-site supervision to support the execution of various hammerhead types, ensuring safe and precise implementation throughout the project.
